Another red alert status for Visayas grid on August 8

MANDAUE CITY, Cebu — Rotational brownouts may again be implemented in parts of Cebu today, August 8, due to an expected power supply shortage in the Visayas Grid.

In an advisory issued at 8 a.m. Saturday, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the grid’s available capacity stood at only 2,103 megawatts, while peak demand could reach 2,327 MW.

Due to the supply shortfall, the Visayas Grid was placed under red alert status for five hours, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A yellow alert status is also in effect from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 10 p.m. to midnight.

NGCP said the power supply shortfall was caused by the forced outages of 10 power plants this August; two plants since July; three since June; seven since May; one since March; three since 2025; two since 2024; two since 2023; and one since 2021.

Meanwhile, 11 power plants are operating at derated capacities, bringing the total unavailable capacity to 1,306.5 MW.

A red alert is issued when the available power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirements. A yellow alert, meanwhile, is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirements.
