Alex Eala beats Caty McNally, advances to fourth round of National Bank Open

TORONTO, Canada — Alex Eala continued her impressive run in the National Bank Open, defeating American Caty McNally, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, to advance to the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto.

Eala, the Filipino tennis star, came into the match riding the momentum of her breakthrough run in Washington, where she captured her maiden WTA 500 title.

The win sends Eala into the fourth round of the National Bank Open, extending what has already been a remarkable stretch for the 20-year-old Filipina.

Eala’s next opponent in the National Open Round of 16 is Swiss Belida Bencic.

The National Bank Open is a WTA 1000 tournament, one of the premier events on the women’s tennis calendar outside the four Grand Slams.

McNally was coming off a huge win prior to this game, beating Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. Eala, meanwhile, defeated another American, Alycia Parks, in her previous game.

Eala had some scary moments in the second set when she called for timeout to have her right foot taped.
