All the 30 MPs of the DMK boycotted the meeting on delimitation convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Chennai on Saturday.

DMK parliamentary party leader K. Kanimozhi on Saturday termed the all-party meeting as nothing more than a “political drama” intended to divert public attention from the ongoing Cauvery water crisis. “When the whole State was protesting for Cauvery water with the political parties insisting the government to convene an all-party meeting on the Mekedatu dam issue, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government remained silent on the demand”, she said in a statement.

The DMK general secretary had clearly laid out the condition that if the party was to participate in the meeting on delimitation, the TVK-led government should convene the all-party meeting on Mekedatu dam. As the government had refused the unanimous call of the parties in the State, the DMK boycotted the MPs meeting, she clarified.

Ms. Kanimozhi stated that the DMK’s position on delimitation was already well-stated and questioned the timing of the Chief Minister’s meeting. “The DMK is steadfast in the protection of Tamil Nadu’s representation and fair delimitation. Tamil Nadu’s stance on this matter has already been clearly stated in the resolutions of all-party meetings,” she said and recalled those resolutions.

At present, there has been no official announcement that the Delimitation Bill would be passed during the current session of Parliament. In such a context, the Chief Minister’s meeting on delimitation was “pure drama”, as there was nothing more to discuss on the issue, she charged.

If the Chief Minister truly cared for the Cauvery delta farmers and their rights, he should send representatives on behalf of the government to submit the resolution passed in the Assembly to the Jal Sakthi Minister, along with the MPs representing Tamil Nadu in Parliament, Ms. Kanimozhi added.
