As of July 21, 2026, about 1.8 GW of distributed gas-fired generation capacity has been installed in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Energy Ministry reported this based on data from the regions, according to Ukrinform.

The Kyiv region leads in the installation of gas-fired cogeneration units, with more than 219 MW installed. More than 100 MW of capacity has also been installed in the Cherkasy region (129.3 MW), Dnipropetrovsk region (118.2 MW), Volyn region (113.6 MW), Ivano-Frankivsk region (108.8 MW), Sumy region (103.6 MW), and Zakarpattia region (100.3 MW).

"Under the regional resilience plans, 388.8 MW of gas-fired generation capacity has been commissioned since March 2026. Construction work is ongoing on 247 units with a total capacity of 532.2 MW," the statement said.

In addition to gas-fired cogeneration, Ukraine continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, particularly wind and solar generation.

In the first half of 2026 alone, 414.8 MW of wind power capacity was commissioned across 70 facilities. The total installed capacity of wind power plants currently stands at 1.115 GW, with the largest capacities in the Mykolaiv region (more than 400 MW) and Odesa region (more than 200 MW).

According to Ukraine's power grid operator Ukrenergo, the total capacity of solar power plants currently stands at 7.3 GW (5.4 GW from producers and 2.25 GW from active consumers). The largest capacities are located in the Dnipropetrovsk region (947 MW), Mykolaiv region (782 MW), and Odesa region (515 MW).

At the same time, energy storage technologies are rapidly developing in Ukraine alongside the expansion of generation capacity. Over the past year, the combined capacity of energy storage systems has increased more than 300-fold, reaching over 600 MW.

The ministry explained that energy storage provides an additional tool for balancing the power system and utilizing energy generated by renewable sources. By storing excess solar power generated during the day, energy storage systems can feed it back into the grid in the evening or morning during periods of peak demand.

As reported, Ukraine needs about EUR 7 billion in investment over the coming years to develop new generation capacity.

According to Vitalii Zaichenko, Chairman of the Management Board at Ukrenergo, by 2030, energy storage capacity is expected to increase to 1.5 GW, flexible gas-fired generation to 2.2 GW, solar generation to 10 GW, and wind generation to 3.6 GW.
