The long-pending demand for bus services between the terminus and railway station in Kancheepuram has been finally fulfilled with the transport department announcing the operation of five new bus routes in the temple city from Saturday.

The Kancheepuram district has become an important town with thousands of pilgrims bound for temples and traders engaged in selling silk sarees visiting the town regularly. Similarly, a large number of residents in Kancheepuram depend on train services to reach Chennai city as the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) had stopped direct bus services several years ago. In such a situation, residents in some parts of Kancheepuram have been seeking a bus service between the crowded bus terminus and the railway station for more than two decades. For a six-kilometre ride from the bus terminus to the railway station, residents shell out ₹100 to ₹120. However, the new bus service has a bus fare of ₹10 only.

J. Ranganathan, secretary of Kanchipuram-Chennai Rail Commuters Association, said hundreds of office goers and traders depend on the suburban train services plying from Beach to Thirumalpur via Chengalpattu to reach the city during the morning and evening hours. While all major towns have bus services plying between the bus terminus and railway station, the Kancheepuram town was missing this link. As a result, office goers have to either depend on personal transport or autorickshaw which is an expensive affair. Residents have been requesting for a bus service and finally Transport Minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban announced the operation of two buses from the Kancheepuram bus terminus to the railway station.

Similarly, residents of Muthialpet and Parandur villages have been requesting for a direct bus service to the Collectorate office, which is located a long distance from the bus terminus.

A senior official of the Kancheepuram district said the Transport Minister has announced five new bus routes, including those from the Collectorate office to the railway station, Vishar to Kancheepuram town, and Muthialpet to railway station. All the bus services would be operated by the Villupuram transport corporation and were flagged off on Saturday.
