Auckland Council has voted in favour of a plan that could see more intensified housing in the city.

It is a response to a government requirement for the council to allow for more than 1.4 million homes to be built in Auckland.

The plan put to councillors today was a compromise between two options that have been sent to local boards for consultation.

One option would have met only the minimum requirements set by the government. The other would have seen further intensification in the city, particularly around town centres and transport hubs.

Councillors voted in favour of the hybrid plan by 17 votes to five. There is a further opportunity for public consultation on Plan Change 120.

The plan keeps six-storey zoning for all areas within walking distance of rapid transit and town centres.

Building heights would also lift to 10-15-storeys around most train stations on all lines within 10km of the city centre, not just specific Western line stations specified in law.

The exception is Meadowbank train station, where it's proposed to reduce building heights to a maximum of six storeys due to its valley location and poor access.
