The Calcutta High Court on Monday (August 10, 2026) directed the Chandannagar police commissionerate to inform former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Asit Majumder whether any criminal cases were pending against him.
His lawyer, Kalyan Banerjee, expressed apprehension before the court that the former Chunchura MLA may have been arraigned in other cases after being granted bail by a Magistrate following his arrest on July 21 on land grabbing charges.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed the Commissioner of Chandannagar Police Commissionerate to provide Majumder, within one week, a list of criminal prosecutions, if any, pending against him.
The CBI had, in a report filed in accordance with the court's earlier direction, clarified that no criminal case was pending with it against Asit Majumder.
The former MLA's lawyer stated before Justice Bhattacharyya that Majumder was arrested on July 21 and granted bail by a Magistrate court in Hooghly district that day itself.
He was arrested based on a police complaint by a neighbour that the former MLA had grabbed her property. Majumder did not contest the Assembly polls this year after the TMC denied him a ticket.
