NOVOSIBIRSK, August 11. /TASS/. A decision has been made to establish Russia's national database of genetic resources, President Vladimir Putin said, addressing a meeting of the Council for Science and Education.

"All data that Russia has on genetic resources of animals, plants and microorganisms will be compiled in a national database of genetic information. A decision has been made on that," he said.

Putin pointed out that the database was expected to receive about 10 petabytes of data annually, equal to roughly five trillion pages of printed text.

"Of course, all decisions in this area should in no way create unnecessary monopolies or hinder researchers’ access to available materials or their ability to maintain scientific and cooperation with colleagues in other countries," the president added.
