On the latest episode of the Daily Mail's On The Case podcast, host Alex Matthews revisits the mugging and callous murder of Tom ap Rhys Pryce with crime reporter Anthony France.

Tom ap Rhys Pryce, 31, was a lawyer at City firm Linklaters, living in the north west London suburb of Kensal Green.

Heading home late from after work drinks on January 12 2006, he stepped off the Tube just a few hundred yards from his home, unaware he was being followed by two teenagers, Donnel Carty, 18, and Delano Brown, 17.

Carty and Brown, who had robbed another man at the same station minutes earlier, tried to mug the smartly dressed lawyer.

Tom fought back. He was kicked to the ground, kicked in the face, then stabbed twice in the chest and once in the hip. One of the wounds proved fatal, piercing his heart.

He died at Central Middlesex Hospital shortly after midnight. Scattered in the street where he fell were wedding plans he had been working on that day. He was due to marry his fiancée Adele Eastman that September.

France, who covered the murder at the time, has returned to the case for The Crime Desk two decades on, with Brown, 38, and Carty, 39, now eligible for release. He has spoken to Tom's father, John ap Rhys Pryce, for the exclusive piece.

France told On The Case why the killing horrified the country.

'He [Tom] had been making his way home from work and he was mugged totally senselessly, stabbed to death - yards from his home,' France said.

'This was a man who was on the cusp of the rest of his life. He had so much to look forward to.

'The level of violence that was used against Tom, who literally had no possessions really worth stealing, is one of the things that made this crime so shocking.

'They stole a paltry amount of money, £20, his mobile phone and his Oyster travel card… so many people were appalled that someone could lose their life over so little.'

Both were convicted of murder at the Old Bailey and jailed for life in November 2006. Brown's 20 year minimum term expired in January. Carty's 21 years runs out next year. Both can now be considered for release by the Parole Board.

On the prospect of their release, France revealed that Tom's father John wants to do the unthinkable and sit down with the two men who killed his son, to ask them why.

After Tom's death, his family set up the Tom ap Rhys Pryce Memorial Trust with Adele and Linklaters.

Two decades on it has raised well over £2million to fund education and training for disadvantaged young people in London and to tackle the gang culture that drew in Carty and Brown.

'John wants to meet them when they are eventually released,' France told the podcast.

'The reason he wants to do that is simply to ask the question: Why? Why did you do it?

'He also wants to find out about prison, did it change their lives? There's a charity the Trust works with that actually uses ex-offenders to go and speak to young people.

'I think one of the things they're really interested in is, could they, with their experience, go and speak to young people who are at the fringes of criminality, and steer them in the right direction?'
