For the first time, the Greater Chennai Police has established an Anti-Corruption Special Unit to prevent corruption and bribery among police personnel. The initiative has been launched by Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj.

Mr. Amalraj told The Hindu, “This unit has been launched at the commissionerate to prevent police personnel from demanding or accepting bribes. Members of the public can lodge complaints through the helpline. On receiving a complaint, we will conduct a proper inquiry and, if a case is made out, take appropriate action against those involved without delay.”

While the majority of police personnel, from constables to senior officers, discharge their duties honestly without accepting bribes, the misconduct of a few individuals brings disrepute to the department, the police said.

Members of the public who are asked for bribes by police personnel, in return for carrying out their duties, have been requested to report such instances directly or through WhatsApp at 78717 23000. The identity of the informants will be kept confidential.

All complaints received will be investigated and immediate action will be taken, the police said. The Commissioner also appealed to the public not to offer bribes to police personnel under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, Mr. Amalraj asked bar owners not to pay bribes to police personnel. He made the appeal during an exclusive meeting with FL-2 and FL-3 bar owners at the Police Commissioner’s Office on Tuesday.

He instructed them to inform him immediately if anyone demanded a bribe. Police personnel were asked to leave the meeting hall when the interaction with the bar owners began, sources said.
