India is committed to safeguarding its national interests and will take all necessary measures after the tripartite Mecca Joint Defence Agreement was sealed last Friday (August 7, 2026) among Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a briefing that India was keeping a close watch on the developments in the West Asian region.

“Regarding this agreement, we are examining its implications both from the perspective of India’s national security and considerations of regional peace and stability. India remains fully committed to safeguarding its national interests and will take all necessary measures in this regard,” said Mr. Jaiswal in response to a question.

A joint statement had said the agreement was aimed at strengthening “collective deterrence against any act of aggression”, saying that “any armed attack against any one of the three states shall be regarded as an attack against them all.” The statement, however, did not specify any area of common concern in the overall context of the ongoing hostilities in West Asia. A Turkish diplomatic source had described the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement as a “defence-oriented partnership that does not target any country”. “It seeks to strengthen commitments to preserving regional and global peace, stability and prosperity through burden-sharing and collective security,” said the Turkish source.

On Friday, the MEA had said it was “closely following” the development.
