Five teenagers were killed when the car they were in crashed over the side of a cliff in Colorado.

Authorities rushed to the crash site in Grand Junction on Sunday morning to find the car had come to rest on a steep hillside.

The vehicle was driving along Lookout Lane when it veered off the road and down the cliff, killing the five people inside, the Grand Junction Police Department said in a Facebook post.

Local officials said all five passengers were 17-year-old boys from Grand Junction, but didn’t release their names because they are minors.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office said in a statement that the crash happened late Saturday night and that three of the boys were wearing seatbelts, including the driver and front seat passenger.

The other two boys who were not wearing seatbelts were thrown from the car, according to the coroner’s office. Officials confirmed all the teens died from injuries they suffered during the crash.

Grand Junction Police said they are investigating the crash and that “speed is being looked at as a factor in this crash,” according to the Facebook post.

The department added that it “recognizes that incidents like this can have a profound impact on families, friends, and the broader community.”

One Facebook user sent their condolences, and another called the crash “very sad.”

Students in 1st to 12th grade returned to Mesa County public schools from summer break Tuesday.

The district said it will have resources for students and staff following the tragic crash, per CBS News Colorado.
