Citizen Smith actress Cheryl Hall has died at 76, her ex-boyfriend has confirmed.

The screen star was best known for playing Shirley Johnson, the girlfriend of Wolfie Smith, in the classic comedy series which ran between 1977 and 1980.

Cheryl was in a relationship with actor and singer Robin Askwith for three years from 1970 and the devastated star announced the news of her death on X.

Robin, known for appearing in the 1970s sex comedy series Confessions, shared a photograph of them together and described her as a 'force of nature'.

He wrote: 'What a force of nature she was. A really innovative working class, charismatic actress coming out of the late 60s. Brave in every way.

'And now I have the sad news she has passed away. I am devastated... She was my beginning. RIP Cheryl Hall'.

Cheryl played Shirna in the 1973 Doctor Who serial Carnival of Monsters and took on roles in other British staples including The Bill, Dear Mother...Love Albert and Lucky Feller.

Cheryl's character was the daughter of Charlie and Florence Johnson, and Wolfie lives with the Johnson family.

Her father is a staunchly conservative, exasperated foil to Wolfie's revolutionary politics.

In more recent years, Cheryl was the Labour Leader of Kent County Council. One person offering their condolences described her as 'fierce and fabulous'.
