Google unveils Pixel Watch 5 with double storage, bigger batteries, and Gemini Intelligence

Google has launched the Pixel Watch 5.
New features on the smartwatch include generative watch faces, blood pressure trends, Breathing Emergency Detection, and more.
It will cost $399 for the 41mm Wi-Fi model, $429 for the 45mm Wi-Fi model, and $579 for the Stephen Curry special edition.

Today is the day Google will host its long-awaited Pixel launch event, where it will showcase the Pixel Watch 5 along with the Pixel 11 series. Instead of waiting until this evening for the show to start, the company is spilling the beans a bit early, while also opening up pre-orders for its new hardware. What does the latest entry into the Pixel Watch line have to offer? Let’s jump into the details and explore everything you need to know about the Pixel Watch 5.

Google Pixel Watch 5: Design, colors, bands, and models

The best place to start is the design, which stays tried and true to the look of previous generations. Last year, Google made a change to the Pixel Watch 4 that resulted in the dome becoming slightly flatter. This same design philosophy was used for the Pixel Watch 5, as Google says it’s bringing back those familiar fundamentals that its customers love.

As for models, you’ll still have your choice between two sizes: 41mm and 45mm. However, Google is offering a special edition version in collaboration with NBA star Stephen Curry. This special-edition model will be available in only one size (45mm) and one connectivity option (LTE).

Both the 41mm and 45mm variants sport an aluminum watch case and ship with a second-gen Active band. However, they’ll be available in a few different color options:

Meanwhile, the Steph Curry special edition will only be available with a Satin Pyrite aluminum case and a Rye Performance Loop Band.

Speaking of bands, there will be plenty of different types to choose from. Included in the box, you’ll get an Active band by default. However, you’ll be able to get all of your favorites, including Active Sport, Woven, Gradient Stretch, Metal Mesh, Metal Links, Metal Slim, and Performance Loop.

Google Pixel Watch 5: Specs

The design isn’t the only thing the Pixel Watch 5 shares with its predecessor. There are a number of specs that are also staying the same. For instance, you’re still getting a 60Hz AMOLED LTPO display that’s protected by custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Both models offer 3,000nits peak brightness, an IP68 rating, NFC support, and GPS.

However, Google didn’t simply copy and paste here, as the Pixel Watch 5 comes with several upgrades. One of the most important of these upgrades is the battery, which jumps up from 325mAh to 332mAh on the 41mm model and 455mAh to 465mAh on the 45mm variant. Google promises 30 hours and 40 hours of always-on display time, respectively.

The old Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip gets swapped out for an accelerated version, which is said to be 12% faster than the previous SoC. Storage has been doubled, so you’re now getting 64GB of eMMC flash storage. You’re also getting support for Bluetooth 6.0, up from Bluetooth 5.3.

Google Watch 5: New features

The Pixel Watch 5 carries over all of the features from the Pixel Watch 4. However, Google is introducing several new features as well. Here are the highlights of those new features:

Blood pressure patterns and insulin resistance

While previous Pixel Watches have allowed you to keep track of blood pressure, the Pixel Watch 5 is taking this to a new level. You’ll now be able to stay on top of trends related to blood pressure, in what Google calls blood pressure patterns. This feature uses the device’s sensors and machine learning to identify patterns in your blood pressure before they put a strain on your heart.

In addition to blood pressure patterns, the company is also rolling out insulin resistance metrics. True to its name, this tool is designed to keep you in the know about your body’s resistance to insulin over time. It will also help you stay on top of your insulin resistance levels over the month.

Pixel Watch 5: Hot or not?

Once again, there’s no new sensor involved here. The watch uses data from its existing sensors, and a new algorithm analyzes 30 days’ worth of that data to provide an estimate of your insulin levels. It’s essentially the same approach used by the blood pressure system.

Think of it like a doctor making a diagnosis based on a patient’s symptoms when a direct test isn’t available: the system is using the data it can collect to make an informed estimate, rather than directly measuring insulin.

Breathing Emergency Detection

In what Google says is “first-of-its-kind,” the latest Pixel Watch is getting Breathing Emergency Detection. If you enable this feature, it can prompt an emergency call if you’re unresponsive and a drop in your oxygen levels is detected. This function is expected to become available in the EU once it’s approved. Google says it has not yet gained FDA clearance for use in the US.

Real-time workout info and exercise filtering

You’ll have to wait until September for this feature to arrive, but the Pixel Watch 5 will give you real-time information on your workout. Through the Google Health app, you can build your workout. That information will be displayed on your watch so you can see what’s going on in real-time.

Additionally, you’ll now be able to filter certain exercises when building a workout. For example, you can filter by equipment type, muscle group, and complexity before syncing to the watch.

Readiness Score

When you’re working out, there are times when you feel like pushing yourself. Conversely, there are times when you might want to hold back and prioritize recovery. The Readiness Score is designed to help you decide whether it’s time to push your limits or stay reserved. You’ll be able to use this feature with over 50 tracked exercises, such as running, swimming, biking, pickleball, basketball, and strength training. When you’re working out, the device will give you audio and visual cues for every set and rest period.

More accurate GPS route tracking

According to the Mountain View-based firm, the Pixel Watch 5 offers the most accurate GPS route tracking of any Pixel Watch to date. Google claims it can outperform the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, while delivering twice the route-tracking accuracy of previous generations. To achieve this, the watch combines Android Location technology with 3D building models, a GNSS reference station network, atmospheric corrections, and building-reflection corrections before refining the final workout maps.

New bedtime animations, watch face, and improved sleep tracking

Google has a handful of new sleep-related additions as well. The tech giant is adding new bedtime animations and a new watch face for bedtime mode. On top of that, improvements have been made to sleep tracking. The company claims that sleep tracking is 15% more accurate than before.

Bedtime Automations

If you’re ready to hit the hay, Google has added a feature to help you wind down for the night. The feature is called Bedtime Automations and is designed to prepare you for sleep. It does this by automatically pausing your music, podcasts, or audiobooks and silencing notifications when you fall asleep.

Sleep Breathing Quality

Adding to the new oxygen-related features, Google is rolling out Sleep Breathing Quality. With this feature, your device analyzes minute-by-minute variations in your blood oxygen levels during sleep. The purpose is to help you better understand how daily and monthly breathing patterns affect your energy, recovery, and heart health.

Gemini Intelligence

Earlier this year, Google introduced Gemini Intelligence, agentic actions that automate even complicated tasks across apps and the web. It was made to change the way Android users interact with their phones. Now it will also be changing how you interact with your smartwatch. Google says that the Pixel Watch 5 has been designed for Gemini Intelligence, allowing it to bring up relevant information based on a text or dynamically surfacing timely updates, like flight information.

New watch faces and complication styles

Two new watch faces will be available for the Pixel Watch 5, called Weave and Chronograph. But if you want to create your own custom watch face, you’ll now be able to do that with the help of generative AI. Along with new watch faces, Google is introducing 11 new glanceable complication styles.

Pricing and availability

As mentioned earlier, the Pixel Watch 5 is up for pre-order right now. Google’s latest smartwatch is available on the Google Store, Best Buy, and Amazon. You can expect the 41mm Wi-Fi model to cost $399. The 45mm Wi-Fi model is a little more expensive, sitting at $429. Meanwhile, the Stephen Curry Special Edition Pixel Watch 5 raises the price to $579. The smartwatch will become generally available on August 20, 2026.
