Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has promised that a flyover will be constructed at Saravanampatti junction, rather than taking up just at-grade improvements, said Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar on Wednesday (August 12) after meeting the Union Minister in New Delhi.

“There was a positive development today. I gave a request to the Minister seeking a flyover at the junction and the Minister said it will be done,” Mr. Rajkumar told The Hindu.

Saravanampatti junction is a crucial location that was identified as a black spot, and the Union government approved a proposal on March 9, 2022 to construct a flyover at ₹80.48 crore. However, the Chennai Metro Rail planned to introduce metro rail on Sathyamangalam road, and it was decided that the flyover project would be dropped and at-grade improvements would be taken up at ₹12 crore.

Now that the Coimbatore metro rail project has been rejected by the Centre, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to take up the Sathyamangalam Road work, the flyover project should be revived, he said.

It is one of the locations in Coimbatore that has a large number of colleges and IT companies. Hence, vehicle movement is high on the road. It will be ideal to have a flyover at the junction rather than just improving the existing road. The MP said he submitted a request to the Minister explaining the ground situation and the Minister agreed that a flyover will be constructed.
