SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's leading online gaming firm Nexon Co. said Thursday its second-quarter net income rose 72 percent from a year earlier due to continued growth of its major franchise games.

Its net profit came to 278.8 billion won (US$196 million) for the April-June period, compared with 162.1 billion won a year ago, the Japan-listed firm said in a release.

Operating profit fell 19.3 percent on-year to 294.3 billion won, while sales inched up by 1 percent to 1.14 trillion won.

Nexon attributed the rise in net profits to the success of its MapleStory franchise at home and abroad, as well as ARC Raiders, which was launched last October.

The company also said its operating profit and sales for the first half of the year recorded the highest for any six-month period.

Nexon said it plans to strengthen its growth momentum by diversifying its portfolio through the launch of new games of various genres and an expansion of its steady seller IPs.
