Professional rug cleaning services can easily run into the hundreds of pounds depending on the pile in question. The hack? Opt for washable rugs, and you can skip an unnecessary bill by refreshing your rug yourself.
Whether you’ve got fitted carpets or laminate flooring, adding a rug not only increases the warmth and ambiance of a room, but it can help soundproof it, too. Plus, they’re great for zoning large open-plan spaces like studio flats without the faff, expense, or semi-permanence of wallpaper or paint.
Every room of my house has a rug, including high-traffic areas like the hall and kitchen. Having one in the kitchen makes the space feel especially decadent, bringing interest to a room that’s usually all function. And it’s washable, so when it starts to resemble a Jackson Pollock painting, I quickly run a vacuum over it to suck up loose debris before slinging it in the washing machine.
As much as I’d love my home to stay showroom-perfect (an ongoing project), the practicalities of everyday life means things rarely work out that way. But being machine-washable is a big plus from a hygiene standpoint, especially in households with kids, pets, and spill-prone inhabitants.
However, it’s worth noting that machine washable doesn't automatically equal stain-resistant. Dark blotches on light-coloured rugs may leave a trace and repeated staining will, inevitably, make a permanent mark. A spin cycle can only forgive so many sins. And, a word to the wise: while runners and smaller rugs should fit into a standard household washing machine without a fight, anything that’s bigger than 160 x 230cm might be a struggle. Laundrettes with larger drum machines are a better bet for bigger rugs that require a seasonal deep clean.

- Bestwashable rug overall
- Why we love it- Huge variety of designs
- Built-in non-slip
-
Stays flat under opening doors
-
Take note- Non-slip backing takes longer to dry fully
I’ve always loved the look of antique rugs, but not the prices that usually come with them. Ruggable has hundreds of options, designed both in-house and as collaborations with the likes of Jonathan Adler, Keith Haring, Disney and more.
The runner rug I tried is inspired by global design and pairs tonally with my red hallway. I like that there’s enough pattern in it to mask light staining, which over time, is inevitable. The machine washable USP will take care of more serious marks, like the coffee I spilled over the lightest areas, where it would show up most.
At just 7mm high, the tuft is low enough to slip under doors without bunching or dragging. Ruggable used to sell its rugs in two parts with a non-slip velcro-type backing supporting a washable upper cover. However, this runner is just one piece, so everything can be thrown into the washing machine when it’s time - built-in nonslip backing and all.
After washing, my rug dried quickly overnight when positioned beside an open window on a drying rack – which is what I’d expect from a polyester design. There was a slight curl at the top end, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a heavy pair of boots.

Why we love it- Fully recyclable
-
Take note- No non-slip backing included
Crafted in Devon, Weaver Green is as green as it gets. My rug arrived in entirely plastic-free packaging, held in a tight coil with fabric ties and labelled with string and cardboard. In fact, the only plastic present is in the rug itself: this fairisle design is made solely from discarded plastic bottles, removing waste from landfill and making it fully recyclable once it reaches the end of its life cycle. I rate that Weaver Green has considered what happens once the rug is no longer usable – fellow homewares brands, take note.
Aside from doing good, it looks great too - even after a spin in the washing machine. The four colours in the mix didn’t fade post-wash and promise to liven up any room while the tasselled trim adds a boho vibe, proving fairisle isn’t just for winter.
A downside? It doesn’t come with a non-slip backing as standard, so this is best placed on existing carpet, layered over another rug, or anchored with heavy furniture, which will also eliminate any crumpling after flat-drying. You can also keep it in place with double-sided tape, like DIY Doctor’s (£12.99, Amazon.co.uk).

Take note- Uneven edges feels a bit careless
It’s all good and well turning your garden into an extra room in the summer, but when autumn rolls in, it can be challenging putting everything away – especially if you don’t have much space to begin with.
Thankfully this furn rug can be used inside as well as out. The colour is protected with a UV resistant finish and the polyester flatweave design fares well in a range of weather conditions - although do hang it up and allow it to fully dry after heavy storms.
The edges aren’t the neatest, but it will brighten up your outdoor space without you getting too precious about it. This was another rug that emerged virtually dry and laid completely flush against the floor after a wash, the polyester fibres completely clean of the stains I’d spilled on it for testing. If you’re planning to use it indoors on hard floors, you’ll need a rug grip or tape to keep it steady as this doesn’t come with any non-slip coating. It essentially feels like a heavy blanket, which does make machine washing much easier.
The playful Tibetan tiger theme is a great way to create a focal point in any space, be it anchoring an outdoor dining set or adding colour to kitchen or entryway floors.

Bestwashable rug for understated elegance
- Why we love it- Timeless appeal
-
Soft underfoot
-
Take note- No grip due to absence of non-slip backing
- Very pale so will show wear easily
- Doesn’t slip easily under doors
Season after season, H&M’s Home department is full of affordable wonders I’m aching to bring home. Its range of rugs largely stick to the Scandi script – expect lots of neutral colours and timeless details, like the tufted floral motifs on this runner.
While it looks lovely, walking across it on laminate flooring made my heart skip a beat - and not in a good way. There’s no non-slip backing here, so you’ll have to fork out on an underlay to hold it steady. That said, it does feel very soft when padding over it.
The obvious place for a runner is a hallway or landing, but for a design as raised and as soft as this, I’d recommend a lower-traffic area: beside a sideboard or at the foot of the bed, say.
The raised tufted design passes the doorway check, but only just - you can hear fibres brushing under the door when it swings open. No biggie, but Ruggable managed a clean sweep. I found it didn’t lie completely flat post washing, as it did when I first received it. You’ll need to anchor it down with something heavy to ease the ripples down.

Bestwashable rug for midcentury flair
- Why we love it- Durable
-
Interesting design
-
Take note- Bit plasticky looking
Bring a splash of colour and pattern to your interiors with Scion’s midcentury-themed rug, which comes in four colour palettes. An anti-slip backing means you won’t need to shell out for an underlay to keep it stable on hard floors, and it won’t move if you’re layering it over fitted carpet either.
It’s more practical than luxurious with a pile height of 1cm, making it suited to high-traffic spots of the house, like the living room or kitchen. If you have kids, this would be ideal for a playroom. I like that the non-slip backing isn’t too rigid; it folds into the washing machine drum easily. A half hour wash was all it took to rid the rug of stains, and it lay back down on the floor without curled edges. The colours looked as vibrant as they did going into the drum.
This is very much a function-first rug – it looks synthetic, unlike other polyester rugs that masquerade as cotton or wool. While reinforcing the edges, the visible overlocked hems feel a bit too rough and ready for my liking. I’d keep it in the kitchen or conservatory to liven up the space without making it the star of the show.

Bestwashable rug for a nod to current trends
- Why we love it- Super plush
- Highly textured

Easy to vacuum
-
Take note- Rubberised backing not as ‘sticky’ on hard floors as others
Scallops continue to prove themselves the interiors catch of the day, as demonstrated by Next. This is the kind of look that will sit in seamlessly with any interior style, though minimalists will appreciate its neutral, textural charms more than most. The thick pile – and it is the thickest I tried – is an utter dream underfoot, although I felt it was a whisker away from feeling like an oversized bathmat.
There’s rubberised backing to stop it from slipping (Next recommends using an additional rug grip for added stability), but that didn’t interfere with my ability to fold it up. I’ll store it away until the cooler months arrive, when its cosiness will come into its own.
Since it’s made from polyester, this rug dries quickly, making deep machine wash cleans less of a room-hogging ordeal if you need to dry it indoors. I spot cleaned a red wine spill off the long-fibres using a household cleaner on a microfibre cloth, but repeated soiling will require a thorough spin in the washing machine.

Bestwashable rug for contemporary style
- Why we love it- UK made from recycled materials
-
Comes with a five-year guarantee
-
Take note- Flatwoven, so you don’t get that plush, sinking-in feeling
The kind of rug that can add a little pizzazz to practically any room, Hug Rug’s design is crafted from recycled polyester and comes in five size options. It’s part of the eco-washable range, which is full of bright, modern rugs where this oval eclipse look is amongst the most pared back.
The graphic look rendered in earthy tones adds interest without overpowering the room and it comes with a non-slip backing made from latex rubber. I usually have a slightly larger rug between the sofas in my living room, but the 120 x 185cm option made the space feel a little larger. That said, it feels like a more practical design than a statement piece. While the all-in-one rug is machine washable at 30C, I found that spot cleaning using a microfibre cloth erased splashes of Malbec quickly and dried fast. Light scrubbing with the microfibre didn’t seem to affect the overall look of the rug, and once dried, I couldn’t detect any difference from the stained area to the rest of the design.

Bestwashable rug for rental properties
-
Why we love it- Stylish enough to fit with most interiors schemes
-
Take note- Underlay sold separately
A simple rug sporting a black dotted design, Ikea sticks to a minimal look with this washable rug, made from flatwoven cotton. The neutral look lends itself well to rental properties or first homes, but must be laid on carpet as it doesn’t come with a non-slip backing. Take it from me, using it as is on laminate flooring will trigger a spike in your BPM; it slips and slides like a surfboard on water without that rubber anchor. Alternatively you can place it under furniture, like a TV stand or coffee table to add understated texture and colour.
As well as being able to wash the rug when it needs a clean, you can iron this design too – just ensure the temperature doesn’t exceed 150C. This is useful, as the rug emerges from the washing machine crumpled – but it does mean adding to your ironing pile. Swings and roundabouts.
In terms of colour, I noticed a slight dimming on the cream. It’s nothing to cry over for the first washing, but I imagine frequent washing over years will mean you may have to replace it more quickly than any other rug on this list.
As for the price? It has a famously agreeable Ikea price tag (and not an Allen key in sight).

Bestwashable rugs for busy hallways
- Why we love it- Affordable
-
Great for high-traffic areas
-
Take note- Not my aesthetic, but my neighbour loved it
A beacon for affordable interiors, here Habitat offers a two-for-one deal with its black-and-white spotted design.
This hallway set includes a washable door mat and runner to sit alongside a shoe rack or hallway bench, trapping outside dirt and moisture so that they don’t track into the rest of the house. It’s backed with grippy latex to stop it sliding around over hard floors. The pile is soft enough to feel cosy underfoot, even after a spin in the washing machine, but it just doesn’t feel or look as luxe as some of the other rugs I tried. It does scrub up superbly after stains though; not even a hefty squirt of ketchup could ruin this design. The rug air dried quickly overnight, so they were ready to go back into position by the morning. When the weather is on-side, drying them outside would mean an even faster turnaround.
At this price point and style, I’d say it’s best for uni halls, rentals, and first homes.
