District Collector Sumit Kumar directed the officials on Thursday to ensure uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water and to take immediate measures to address shortages in several villages.

Addressing a review meeting with the Panchayat Raj and Rural Water Works departments here, the Collector instructed officials to inspect drinking water sources, repair damaged pipelines and pumps, and prevent wastage. Authorities should assess water availability and ensure that tanks are cleaned and chlorinated once every fortnight.

Officials said that drinking water shortages were reported in 53 habitations in Bangarupalem, Puthalapattu, Peddapanjani, Vijayapuram and other mandals. The Collector said that officials should immediately study alternative measures like borewells, pipeline and pumping works on a war footing.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sumit Kumar directed MPDOs to restore Aadhaar centres that have remained non-functional for nearly 15 days. Centres in Penumur, S.R. Puram, Chittoor Urban, Karvetinagaram and Gudipala must resume operations within a week, he said.

He said that free Aadhaar biometric update services would be offered on August 13, 14, 17 and 21, benefiting around 22,000 people.

The Collector said that a district-level job mela will also be held at Jyotirao Phule Bhavan in Chittoor on August 25, directing the MPDOs to mobilise youth across the district.
