A 73-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh was arrested by the Airport police for allegedly attempting to extort ₹65,000 from a man by promising him a government job in the Customs Department.

The accused Sangaraiya of Gudur was staying in Alandur and was frequently seen around the airport premises. According to the police, Sangaraiya met Ramamurthy of Maraimalai Nagar in Tambaram, while travelling on an MTC bus a few days ago. Sangaraiya allegedly introduced himself as a Customs Department official and claimed that he could secure a government job for Ramamurthy in return for money.

On Wednesday morning, Sangaraiya contacted Ramamurthy over the phone and told him that it was the last day for submitting applications. He instructed Ramamurthy to bring a filled-in application form and ₹65,000, meant for Customs officials, to the entrance of the Chennai Airport Metro.

Ramamurthy reached the spot with the money. However, when Sangaraiya demanded the cash, he became suspicious and handed him over to the Chennai Airport police. During interrogation, the police found that Sangaraiya had been cheating people by making false promises of securing jobs at the airport. The police arrested him and produced him before the Alandur Magistrate Court.
