Students should use their university years to discover their potential and develop expertise in their chosen fields, said Richard King, Region Head – Academic Alliances, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Hyderabad, at the freshers’ orientation programme of VIT-AP University on Thursday.

Addressing the new batch for the 2026–27 academic year, Mr. King said joining a university marks the beginning of a new journey in which students have the opportunity to shape their future through what they learn, how they learn and how they apply their knowledge.

Emphasising the importance of continuous learning and collaboration, Mr. King said the university campus offers students an opportunity to interact with peers from diverse backgrounds and learn from one another. With technology evolving rapidly, he advised students not to attempt to master everything but instead to identify their areas of interest and build expertise.

VIT University Chancellor G. Viswanathan described education as the most enduring form of wealth an individual could possess, noting that unlike material possessions, it could neither be destroyed nor stolen but grows when shared with others.

Dr. Viswanathan stressed that education must remain a priority for nations seeking economic and social progress. Referring to India’s higher-education enrolment levels, he called for greater investment in the sector and said the country should work towards allocating 6% of its GDP to education.

Founder and CEO of Alfaleaus Technology Private Limited., Hyderabad, and a VIT Vellore alumnus, Sandal Kotawal recalled how the institution’s supportive environment encouraged him to turn ideas into innovations.

He spoke about his journey in developing IVA, a compact device aimed at facilitating early detection of glaucoma and encouraged students to make full use of the freedom and guidance available on campus.

VIT-AP Vice-Chancellor P. Arulmozhivarman said education was not merely about obtaining a degree but about discovering one’s potential, nurturing talent and developing the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed. He urged students to explore ideas, embrace opportunities and become responsible individuals capable of contributing to society.

Registrar Jagadish Chandra Mudiganti welcomed the students and their parents, while Deputy Director–Admissions John Pradeep spoke about the university’s support for freshers.
