Step outside in Delhi right now, and it feels less like a city after rain and more like a steam room with traffic. The thermometer might say 30 degrees Celsius, yet your body insists it is closer to 40 degrees Celsius.
This sauna-like feeling is not your imagination. It is what meteorologists call a humidity trap, and the science behind it is genuinely interesting once you break it down.
WHY IS THE AIR SO WET EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT RAINING?
Blame the monsoon wind pump. Through July, moisture-loaded winds sweep in from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, riding the monsoon trough straight into the Indo-Gangetic plains.

Think of the atmosphere as a sponge. In winter, Delhi's sponge is fairly dry. In monsoon, it is soaked, and it stays soaked because the wind keeps refilling it, rain or no rain.
This points to the monsoon trough, cyclonic circulations, and moisture incursion as the main drivers of Delhi's muggy spells.
DOES RAIN NOT DRY THE AIR OUT?
Counterintuitively, no. Rain cools things briefly, but the moment sunshine or residual heat hits wet roads, rooftops and soil, that water evaporates straight back into the air.
Warm air can hold far more moisture than cool air, so this evaporation quietly recharges humidity even as the rain gauge fills up.
HOW DO CLOUDS ADD TO THE TRAP?
Thick monsoon cloud cover works like a lid on the city. During the day, clouds block a good deal of direct sunlight from reaching the ground, which sounds like it should cool things down.
But at night, those same clouds do the opposite: they trap outgoing heat that would otherwise escape into space, acting rather like a blanket thrown over Delhi.
This keeps the lower atmosphere warmer than it would be on a clear night, and since warmer air can hold on to more water vapour, the moisture already present has nowhere to go.
Instead of the air cooling down and wringing out some of its moisture as dew, it stays warm and saturated right through the night, so mornings in Delhi often feel just as sticky as the afternoon before.
WHAT DOES 80 PER CENT HUMIDITY ACTUALLY MEAN?
It does not mean the air is 80 per cent water. Relative humidity is a ratio: how much water vapour the air is holding compared with the maximum it could hold at that temperature.
At 80 per cent, the air is close to its ceiling, leaving very little room for your sweat to evaporate into it.
WHY DOES THIS MAKE HEAT FEEL WORSE?
Your body cools down mainly by evaporating sweat. In dry heat, sweat evaporates fast and does its job. In humid heat, the air is already nearly saturated, so sweat just sits on your skin, sticky and useless.
This gap between the thermometer and how hot it actually feels is measured through the heat index.
WHY DOES DELHI'S CITYSCAPE MAKE IT WORSE?
Concrete, asphalt and flyovers soak up heat all day and release it slowly after dark, an effect known as the urban heat island.

Combined with pollution particles that can absorb moisture and thicken the air overhead, Delhi’s built environment stops the city from cooling down the way a forest or open plain would overnight.
WHEN DOES THE TRAP BREAK?
Only sustained, heavy rain with strong gusty winds actually clears out the moist air mass.
Light, patchy showers, which is largely what Delhi is getting through this week, simply top up the humidity without ever truly flushing it out.
