Slain scout Chris Fabian named Tacloban’s Young Hero in school shooting

TACLOBAN CITY — Slain student and scout Chris Lorenz Fabian has been honored by the Tacloban City Government as the city’s “Young Hero” for his courage and selfless sacrifice during the tragic shooting at San Jose National High School (SJNHS) on June 22, 2026.

The recognition was conferred through City Ordinance No. 2026-16-15, which recognizes Fabian’s “extraordinary selfless courage and supreme sacrifice” in the face of danger.

Fabian’s mother, Erbea Fabian, accepted the recognition on behalf of her late son and expressed gratitude to the city government and everyone who continues to honor the memory and bravery of the 15-year-old scout.

“I am deeply grateful that my son’s courage has not been forgotten,” she said during the ceremony.

Fabian was among the three students who died in the school shooting that shocked Tacloban and the rest of the country.

Chris Fabian’s heroism

According to earlier reports and resolutions recognizing his heroism, the young scout displayed exceptional presence of mind by rushing to close the classroom door in an effort to shield his classmates from the attacker.

His action save the lives of the students inside the classroom.

Days after the tragedy, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines-Leyte Council also honored Fabian through a resolution recognizing his exemplary courage and devotion to the Scout ideals of service and sacrifice.

The passage of City Ordinance No. 2026-16-15 further institutionalizes the city’s recognition of Fabian’s heroism, ensuring that his bravery will remain part of Tacloban’s history and serve as an enduring inspiration to the youth.

The conferment of the “Tacloban Young Hero” title highlights the city’s recognition of young people who exemplify courage, leadership and service to the community.

Earlier, Fabian was posthumously named one of the recipients of the 2026 Outstanding Eastern Visayas Awards, where he was cited for embodying extraordinary heroism, selflessness and love for others even at a young age. /apl
