Residents have raised concern over the poor maintenance of the Corporation Park on Shastri Road/Fort Station Road at Thillai Nagar, a prime locality in Tiruchi.

The park, which used to be popular with residents for walking, recreation, and other leisure activities, has allegedly been neglected for a considerable period. Residents said the poor upkeep was discouraging people from using the park, particularly in the evening.

The overgrown vegetation reflects the poor maintenance of the park, and the damaged play equipment were in need of repair. The play area lacks adequate lighting, raising concern over the safety of children after dusk, and the toilets in the park have been closed for want of maintenance.

“The park no longer feels safe for children at night, particularly due to the overgrown bushes, which may attract reptiles and insects. The park was once crowded and well-used, but its footfall has gradually declined over time due to poor upkeep,” said K. Dinakaran, a visitor.

Residents have urged the Corporation to take steps to clean and maintain the park. They said periodic inspections were essential to ensure that the park remained a safe and usable public space for visitors.

Except for those in major areas such as Ibrahim Park on West Boulevard Road, Chinnasamy Park in K.K. Nagar and R.S. Puram South Park, which have been outsourced to private agencies for maintenance, several parks in the city are in a neglected state, especially those in the interior residential areas.

Following repeated complaints about the poor upkeep of parks in several localities, the civic body has been surveying all parks, roadside parks, and open-air gyms under its purview. There are about 310 public parks, 108 playgrounds, and 39 open-air gyms in all the five zones of the city. Women’s self-help groups have been roped in to maintain 11 parks across the city.
