CEBU CITY, Philippines—Fifteen years after promising his grandmother that he would finish school, Ariel Dome has finally kept his word.

Dome graduated cum laude with a BS Geography degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman on July 5, 2026, marking a milestone made even more meaningful by the sacrifices of the grandmother who raised and supported him.

When Dome left for Manila as a young student, he recalled how difficult the separation was for his grandmother, especially as their family struggled financially. Despite the uncertainty, he made her a promise—to finish his studies no matter what.

The road to graduation was far from easy. To support himself, Dome took on various jobs, working as a balut vendor, carinderia dishwasher, market porter, call center agent, and taking on other work along the way.

Then came another difficult moment just weeks before his graduation.

In May 2026, Dome called his grandmother around midnight, crying as he asked for financial help. He said he had nowhere else to turn. A week later, his grandmother sold her cow to help him overcome the financial problem.

That sacrifice became one of the final steps that helped Dome make it to graduation.

Sharing to celebrate

Looking back on everything they went through, Dome said his reason for sharing the story online was not simply to talk about his struggles, but to celebrate a victory they both worked for.

“Ang reason na gipost nako to kay we want to celebrate it and how thankful I am as someone na gipadako sa amoang Lola,” he told CDN Digital.

(The reason I posted it was we wanted to celebrate and I show how thankful I am to have been raised by my grandmother.)

Dome also wanted to show just how much he loves his grandmother and share the story behind the events leading up to his graduation.

“Ganahan ra ko nga makita nako na love na love nako siya and ma-share ang story unsay nahitabo before ko ni-grad last July.” Dome recalled.

(I wanted to show how much I really loved her and to share what happened before I graduated.)

For him, his graduation was not just about earning a degree. It was also about honoring the woman who stood by him through years of hardship—and giving her a memory she could always treasure.

“Tungod sa iyang baka na gibaligya, nakalingkawas ko sa akong problema atong May. Pero ang post ra gyud is meant to celebrate our success and how proud she is [of] me kay iyaha daw to handumanan,” he said.

(Because she sold her cow, I was freed from the problem I faced in May. But I posted to celebrate and show how proud she has been of me, and for a souvenir for her.)

His heartfelt tribute resonated with netizens, many of whom praised Dome for being a loving and grateful grandson who never forgot the sacrifices his grandmother made for him.

After 15 years, a promise made to Lola has finally become a reality.
