The University of Calicut (CU) has decided to seek a detailed police probe into the reported financial irregularities in its Department of Physical Education. The authorities recently suspended a section clerk in this connection.

According to sources, official action was taken against P.J. Arun Kumar, the section clerk, based on an interim report following an internal inquiry by the finance officer. It is learnt that Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran has asked the Registrar to inquire into the alleged lapses on the part of senior officials in spotting financial irregularities in time and taking corrective steps against them.

The sources said the internal inquiry was initiated after Mr. Raveendran detected suspicious activities during an inspection. The interim report revealed information related to the alleged irregularities.

Meanwhile, the Sports Convocation Day, earlier scheduled for August 18, has been postponed. A new schedule for the event is yet to be announced.
