Habagat rains to return to parts of Luzon Sunday afternoon

MANILA, Philippines — Generally fair weather is expected to persist until Sunday afternoon, when parts of Luzon may experience heavy rains due to the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” the state weather bureau said Saturday afternoon.

Pagasa weather specialist Daniel Villamil said during the 5 p.m. weather advisory that the southwest monsoon’s effects had weakened on Saturday.

By Sunday afternoon, however, the “habagat” is expected to trigger heavy rains in Northern and Central Luzon, as well as parts of the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) regions.

“In terms of intensity, humina po ang pag ulan, yun nga lang for today. Kasi starting tomorrow afternoon makakaranas ulit tayo ng pag ulan. Muling lalakas ang pag ulan dala ng habagat dito sa area ng Northern and Central luzon, maging sa Calabarzon portions as well as sa portions ng Mimaropa,” Villamil said.

(In terms of intensity, the rainfall has eased—though only for today—because starting tomorrow afternoon, we will experience rain again. The rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon will intensify once more in Northern and Central Luzon, as well as in parts of Calabarzon and Mimaropa.)

Meanwhile, Pagasa is monitoring a tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), located some 3,111 kilometers (km) east of northeastern Mindanao.

It has a maximum sustained wind speed of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 55 kpf, while moving northwest.

A low-pressure area also outside of PAR was spotted some 2,333 km east northeast of extreme Northern Luzon.

Villamil said that the two weather disturbances will not directly affectthe country in the coming days as the “habagat”will continue to be the dominant weather system affecting major parts of Luzon, as well as the western portions of Visayas.
