Patriotic fervour and gaiety marked the 80th Independence Day celebrations in Madurai on Saturday.

Madurai City Commissioner of Police S. Rajendran hoisted the national flag at the Police Boys and Girls Club at Karumbalai. At Gandhi Memorial Museum, the celebrations was presided over by Museum Secretary K.R. Nanda Rao and Treasurer M. Senthil Kumar. Managing Director of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Madurai) V. Saravanan hoisted the national flag at the Madurai Zone headquarters.

Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president N. Jegatheesan hoisted the national flag on chamber premises. At Agro Food Trade Centre its Executive Director K. Suresh Kumar hoisted the national flag. Agro Food Trade Centre founder S. Rethinavelu hoisted the national flag at ViSa school. Officer-bearers of Tamil Nadu Food Grains Merchants Association hoisted the flag on its premises.

At Madurai Kamaraj University, Registrar in-charge S. Muthiah hoisted the national flag. The Independence Day was held in a grand manner in Al-Ameen Higher Secondary School, Lady Doak College, The American College and Madurai Kamaraj University College.

Gomathipuram residents celebrated Independence Day. Residents welfare President D. Raghavan hoisted the national flag and Senior Ophthalmologist T. Badri Narayanan distributed Prizes at the event.
