Darkest Dungeon 2 landed well enough and received generally positive reviews, but it's never been universally accepted in the same way the original game was, as Steam user reviews of Darkest Dungeon 2 highlight. Now, developer Red Hook Studios is surprising fans with a return to the original game.
Darkest Dungeon: The Fire's Edge is a newly revealed add-on that brings two new heroes to the game from Darkest Dungeon 2 - the Duelist and the Runaway. The former is "a complex damage dealer that dances between the party's ranks" while alternating between aggressive and defensive combat stances, whereas the Runaway is "a position-flexible damage dealer utilising a unique burn damage type".

The Runaway's inclusion leads into The Fire's Edge's other key addition: the introduction of the burn combat mechanic. Trinkets are also being reworked with new mechanics. Moreover, three new Hamlet districts - Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp - are part of the deal as well.
Players won't have to wait long to get their hands on all of this, as Darkest Dungeon: The Fire's Edge launches on 18th August. It's a nice way to celebrate the first game's 10th birthday, after its original release on 19th January, 2016. The choice to update the old game is also interesting when considering the future of the series - have the priorities changed? However, Red Hook has already teased another DLC for Darkest Dungeon 2 to arrive in early 2027.
