A complaint has been submitted to the Thrissur City Police Commissioner seeking an inquiry into an alleged incident of disruption during the rendition of Vande Mataram at the Thrissur Corporation’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

The complaint alleges that the singing of Vande Mataram was obstructed and that disrespect was shown towards the national song during the official function.

According to the complaint, eight Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-elected councillors began singing Vande Mataram after the Corporation’s official programme did not include its rendition. The complaint alleges that the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Corporation Secretary and various standing committee chairpersons left the venue and that attempts were made to interrupt the singing through announcements over the microphone.

The complainants have sought an immediate investigation to establish the facts of the incident. They have urged the police to collect and examine video recordings of the programme, CCTV footage, photographs and statements from witnesses.
