American chat show host Jimmy Fallon has taken aim at the state of UK politics, mocking Andy Burnham becoming the newest prime minister in a skit – however, many Brits aren’t seeing the funny side.

In a sketch onThe Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the US comic mocked the fact that Brits have witnessed seven prime ministers enter No. 10 Downing Street over the last decade. Speaking to the audience, Fallon said: “The UK just appointed their seventh new prime minister in only 10 years and now here to talk about it is the new prime minister, Andy Burnham. Andy, thank you for being here.”

The show then cut to a tall man in glasses in front of the prime ministerial residence, whose similarities with Burnham appeared to stop there as he then said in a plummy English accent: “Thanks for having me Jimmy. I’m thrilled to serve both King and country in this new role.”

After cutting back to Fallon, who asked what the first item of his agenda as country leader would be, a completely different person was seen standing in Burnham’s place, saying: “Great question, Jimmy.”

“I’m sorry, what’s going on? What happened to Andy? The prime minister,” a confused Fallon asked, to which the new leader replied: “Oh, he’s no longer prime minister. I am – Nigel Remmington.”

The same gag repeated throughout the skit, with different, generic British politicians replacing one another before a frustrated Fallon asked: “Can you guys just pick someone and stick to it? Isn’t there someone in the UK who everyone likes?”

It’s at that point that Harry Potter’s Albus Dumbledore showed up as the new prime minister. “You’re not even a real guy,” Fallon asked, to which the white-bearded wizard responded: “It was either me or Meghan Markle,” before – checks notes – dabbing.

Unsurprisingly, many Brits didn’t take too kindly to the skit – particularly the impression of Burnham. “At least give Burnham a northern accent ffs,” one viewer wrote on X, while another said: “Why did Burnham a southern accent? The guys main thing is hes the northern one.”

“F*** it’s unfunny but it’s annoyingly accurate,” a third wrote. While a fourth tweeted: “Very funny,” with a GIF of a lego figure dying from “cringe”.

Others heaped praise on the show however, with one writing on YouTube: “As an Englishman, I just want to say that this is completely accurate.” Another said: “UK skit is truer to life than reality.”

Labour prime minister Burnham is famously from Lancashire and an MP for Makerfield in Greater Manchester, having previously been the city’s mayor for nine years. He’s vowed to move more country-running operations up north, pledging to create an outpost of Downing Street based in Manchester.

Earlier this year, Burnham was portrayed by comedian Paddy Young on Saturday Night Live UK in a sketch where various Labour party members tried to oust Keir Starmer out of No. 10 and move in. Bursting into the residence with a bindle over his shoulder, Young’s Burnham announced that he had taken “the tram down” from Manchester.

Last month, Fallon faced backlash after interviewing Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor following his 2024 sexual assault trial – with actor Christina Ricci sharing a post which read: “Why the absolute f*** is this piece of human garbage being given a platform on Jimmy Fallon’s show? Shame on you, Jimmy.”
