A fast-food chain with a cult following has made a menu update to make wallets happy.

Whataburger, a San Antonio-based burger chain with more than 1,700 stores across the southern half of the U.S., announced a new $4 value menu Tuesday that features four sandwiches.

"We know our guests are looking for more ways to enjoy the Whataburger favorites they love at a price that fits their everyday lives," COO Jessica Reicher said.

The menu offers four “Jr.” sandwiches that are smaller than regular menu items: the bacon and cheese Whataburger Jr., Whataburger Patty Melt Jr., Honey BBQ chicken strip sandwich Jr. and buffalo ranch chicken strip sandwich Jr. Diners looking for something more filling can add small fries and a drink for $3 more.

Whataburger’s value menu aligns with other fast-food chains trying to entice customers with low-price offerings.

McDonald’s $5 value menu has been a mainstay on the chain’s menu since June 2024. Diners get a double cheeseburger or chicken sandwich plus four chicken nuggets, a small fries and small drink.

Burger King offers its flagship sandwich, the Whopper, for $3.98 on Wednesdays, and a breakfast sandwich combo for $5.

In January, Wendy’s announced a $4 Biggie Bites menu option where customers can combine options from two groups of food and drink.

The value-menu wars comes at a time when fast-food chains, restaurants and the retail industry more broadly are fighting for customers’ dollars.

Consumers have become more cautious in spending as they struggle to keep up with inflation and, in particular, the cost of gas, since the start of President Donald Trump’s war against Iran in late February.

In a May earnings call, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski called the economic landscape a “pressured consumer environment”, and said that the situation was “certainly not improving, and it may be getting a little bit worse.”

Some 72 percent of consumers believe that restaurant prices are rising faster than grocery prices, and half said they ordered less frequently from restaurants in the first three months of the year.

The cost of living has soared in 2026. Gas prices surged past $4 in late March for the first time in four years. Inflation hit a three-year high of 4.2 percent in May after dropping to a modest 2.4 percent in January and February.

Whataburger’s devoted following may help it weather the economic storm.

The company’s combination of building a strong employee culture, offering customers a wide range of burger customizations, and the 24/7 hours that many of its restaurants have are a few of the reasons why the brand is beloved in its home state of Texas and beyond, a May 2025 article from fast-food publication QSR pointed out.
