Israeli opposition leader and former prime minister criticise Netanyahu over Syria attacks

Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan said that the attack on a Syrian air base was a "provocative and dangerous" move that deepens the rift Tel Aviv's allies and brings it closer to a "confrontation" with Turkey.

"Once again, military force is being employed for political considerations, and once again Israel pays the price in security," he said in a post on X.

"[Benjamin] Netanyahu proves once more that he is an extremist and unreliable figure, one we cannot rely on and certainly not build a stable regional strategy with. In this way, he erodes trust in Israel, alienates us from partners and allies."

He added that Israel needs leadership that is able to "achieve security" instead of creating "another war for political survival".

Similar remarks were made by former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in a series of posts on X, where he described Netanyahu's "deliberate" escalation of tensions with Ankara as "reckless and foolish".

"Turkey is not Iran or Assad's Syria. There is no strategic problem vis-à-vis Turkey that cannot be resolved, mitigated, or deferred to the long term through discreet contacts coordinated with the United States and its influence in Turkey and Syria," he wrote.

"Netanyahu has completely gone off the rails," Barak added, and expressed that the current premier is "no longer engaged with Israel's security, but rather with survival manipulations of a compulsive gambler."
