SEOUL, Aug. 20 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean won hit a fresh 11-month high against the U.S. dollar Thursday, bolstered by dollar selling by exporters while the dollar remained weak after the U.S. Treasury Department's move to calm a surge in long-term bond yields.

The won was quoted at 1,392.6 won per greenback at 3:30 p.m., up 5.1 won from the close of the previous stock trading day.

The won opened at 1,387 won per dollar and rose to as high as 1,384.1 won at one point, marking the strongest level since Sept. 18 last year.

With exporters continuing to sell dollars, the won's advance was also driven by the dollar's weakness after the Treasury Department doubled its planned purchases of long-dated bonds.

Foreigners bought a net 1.7 trillion won (US$1.23 billion) worth of local stocks during the latest trading session, with the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index jumping 5.89 percent to close at 6,852.58.
