Amitabh Bachchan has dismissed rumours about his health after a blog post on surgery, intensive care and recovery triggered concern among fans. The 83-year-old actor said the post was misunderstood and clarified that he had not undergone any surgery.

Speaking to Variety India on Tuesday, Bachchan said he was referring to Argentina’s loss to Spain in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup final and to Lionel Messi as a champion dealing with defeat. He added that people had assumed the post was about his own health.

Clarifying the matter, the veteran actor said, “I am fine. I did not undergo surgery. It is a misunderstood post. I was giving an example that the period after a surgery or ICU, the most difficult time is when you come home and have to deal with your damaged condition. So when a champion loses, the most difficult time is dealing with yourself in its aftermath.”

He further said, “I was referring to Argentina’s loss (against Spain in the FIFA World Cup) and Messi as a champion that lost. People have assumed it's a reference to me.” When asked if his health was okay, he replied, “Absolutely... so far.”

The blog post that sparked concern

On Tuesday, a day after the FIFA World Cup final, in which Spain beat Argentina to lift their second world title, Bachchan shared a long note on his Tumblr blog about surgery, recovery and being in the ICU, without mentioning the World Cup.

He wrote, “In hospital in a surgery and in the ICU, under the care of proficient doctors and medical staff, a discharge and a homecoming. This homecoming period is the most difficult phase, physically, psychologically and practically. You are a revered champion, and one day a defeat stares at you. This is the most difficult phase of your life.”

He also reflected on the mental strain of recovery and setbacks. In the same note, he wrote, “Some brave it, some succumb; those that strive and be brave ever remain Champions; they that do not, get reconciled and live, exist in the past glory, a choice each makes individually, nothing wrong by either. Be well, be happy (sic).”

Upcoming work

Bachchan will next be seen in the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, where he will reprise his role as Ashwatthama. The Nag Ashwin film also stars Prabhas and Kamal Haasan in lead roles. He will also return as host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, with the latest season set to air from August 10.
