Netflix unveiled the first footage from the Emmy-winning animated series’ second season at Anime NYC, confirming a January 2027 return for Maya Erskine’s vengeful swordswoman. The new season follows Mizu after she sets sail for England at the end of Season 1, pursuing two remaining targets who have ties to her mysterious origins.
Mizu spends much of the footage aboard a ship battling rough seas before eventually reaching England, where her journey takes her into unfamiliar territory. The new season will place the Japanese warrior in London as she encounters new allies, enemies and circumstances that challenge the assumptions she has carried throughout her quest.
Maya Erskine returns as Mizu, the mixed-race master swordswoman who has spent her life hiding her identity while pursuing four white men who were in Japan around the time of her birth. Season 1 ended with Mizu learning that two of her remaining targets, Fowler and Skeffington, had travelled to London, setting up her voyage west.
The story will also continue in Japan through the characters Mizu left behind. Brenda Song returns as Akemi, who is now navigating the political world of Edo Castle, while Darren Barnet’s Taigen remains caught up in her new circumstances. Masi Oka returns as Ringo, who begins searching for a new purpose after separating from Mizu. Netflix describes their storyline as unfolding under a dangerous new shogun.
The returning voice cast also includes George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Randall Park and Kenneth Branagh, alongside the principal cast from the first season. Amber Noizumi and Michael Green return as creators, writers and executive producers, with Jane Wu continuing as supervising director and producer. Blue Spirit remains the animation studio behind the series.
The first season of Blue Eye Samurai premiered on Netflix in November 2023 and became one of the platform’s most acclaimed animated productions. It went on to win four Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program, as well as six Annie Awards.
The new season will also mark a major geographical and cultural expansion for the series. Mizu’s creators have previously discussed their interest in exploring what happens when a character shaped by Edo-period Japan encounters Europe, particularly the way Mizu’s understanding of the world could change when she is suddenly immersed in Western society.
Netflix has already confirmed that Mizu’s story will continue beyond the second season. Season 3 has been renewed as the show’s final season and is scheduled for 2028, giving the revenge saga a defined endpoint.
