Samsung's unexpected Galaxy S8 and Note 8 update is now reaching more users

Samsung ended official software updates for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 years ago, so it was a little nice surprise when the company pushed what appeared to be an emergency fix to the duo a couple of months ago. At the time, the update was limited to US variants of the phones, but the rollout now appears to be expanding to global units.

The update is arriving with firmware version G950FXXUCDZE7 for the Galaxy S8, while the Galaxy Note 8 is getting version N950FXXUGDZEA. The security patch level remains unchanged on both phones — April 2021 for the S8 and August 2021 for the Note 8 — and so does the underlying Android OS. Samsung says the update improves device behavior but won’t go into specifics. The company also warns that these changes may vary depending on model, country, and network operator.

There are no details on what exactly these updates bring beyond generic “stability and reliability” changelogs. But whenever such updates roll out, it is usually to address an emergency concern, so those still hanging onto a Galaxy S8 or Note 8 should pay closer attention. A screenshot shared by a Galaxy S8 user on Reddit shows a significant 420.37MB OTA update, so we can only guess the magnitude of what it brings to your device based on the file size.

Still, a gap of nearly two months between the US and global rollout of these updates seems a bit off. If this were indeed a critical fix, the OTA should have been released to global units around the same time as US models. But given the nature of the update, where devices involved stopped receiving official software support years ago, we can’t think of a reason why Samsung didn’t push this out to all models at once.
