While obviously there is the shared universe between the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Netflix anime show and Cyberpunk 2077 itself, the third trailer for Edgerunners season 2 has just revealed something huge. A much, much larger connection, this time to the main story of the game.

In the new footage, it’s revealed that D, a Nomad Netrunner, has a Relic chip that he inserts into his body. The Relic chip, of course, is the impetus for the main storyline of Cyberpunk 2077, where V inserts the experimental tech that contains the soul, in effect, of a real person. In V’s case, that is the rocker/terrorist Johnny Silverhand. Also in V’s case, the damaged Relic means they are trudging toward an inevitable death, one they spend the game trying to prevent.

The Relic that D has is not the Relic, despite looking identical, as this is a series of chips, not that there’s a singular one in existence. And if the Relic is here, it is clearly going to be a major plot point in this new season. I am particularly interested in one of the final lines of the trailer, where a character says to D, “You’re a weapon…made out of people?”

To me, that implies something rather wild could be happening, where D perhaps inserts a number of different Relics, each with the souls/psyches of stored people. And the type of people Arasaka has bothered to store clearly aren't random civilians.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 1 only had cursory connections to Cyberpunk 2077. A story quest involving the characters, at least the lore of them, was added to the game later, though it was more of an easter egg than anything else. Here, a season that uses the MacGuffin of the entire game is much more significant.

While season 1 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners took place before the events of the game, it has not yet been confirmed whether Edgerunners season 2 is before, during or after 2077, though it is after season 1. Edgerunners is officially canon to the game itself, and that will include the sequel that CDPR is currently working on.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 airs October 20, almost four years after the September 2022 release of season 1. We are now deep into the era of Cyberpunk 2077 being considered perhaps an all-time great game after years of fixes and additions. This Edgerunners season comes after the Phantom Liberty expansion, an all-time great DLC, and possibly the best content in the game.

We will find out how the Relic plays into the season in two months now, but this trailer is certainly the most intriguing so far because of it.
