SINGAPORE - A group of cyclists who were seen in a viral video being chased by the Traffic Police (TP) in the early hours of Aug 15 were among 18 people caught flouting various traffic rules.
In a statement on Aug 23, the police said it had on Aug 14 conducted a joint enforcement operation with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) against errant cyclists and personal mobility device (PMD) users in the vicinity of Jalan Anak Bukit and West Coast Highway.
A total of 17 cyclists and one PMD user were nabbed and issued composition fines, with 26 offences detected.
The police said 13 cyclists were caught on the road during the hours of darkness without displaying the required white light at the front and/or red light or red reflector at the rear.
Ten of the cyclists nabbed were also caught riding a bicycle on a road without wearing a protective helmet.
Summon action were taken against them.
A bicycle was also seized after a cyclist was caught riding a fixed-gear bicycle on a public path without a working handbrake, while a PMD was seized after a person was caught riding a non-compliant PMD on a public path.
Investigations for both cases are ongoing.
The police said the authorities take a serious view of such offences that endanger public safety and contravene the law.
They added that they will continue to conduct regular enforcement operations with LTA to ensure greater compliance.
“Cyclists and PMD users are strongly advised to comply with all regulations and practise safe riding habits,” said the police.
During the enforcement operation on Aug 14, TP and LTA officers also engaged cyclists and PMD users to raise awareness on relevant rules and guidelines.
In a video posted to Facebook page Beh Chia Lor on Aug 15, around seven cyclists are seen being chased by two TP officers.
