A man is in critical condition in Wellington Hospital, after being being hit by a car in Manawatū in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He was found after police were called to Halcombe Road, north of Feilding, about 12:20am.
"That person was located with extensive injuries, and is currently in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital," Detective David Burrows said.
"The vehicle allegedly involved in this incident left the scene before police arrival - we want to speak with the driver as the information that he has will be vital to our investigation."
Police said there may be witnesses with video footage who were reluctant to come forward.
"There were a number of people in attendance at the time this incident took place, and we believe someone will either have information that can assist us in identifying the alleged driver or any other information that can assist in our investigation," Burrows said.
"We're providing the family of the young person who was injured with the support they need at this time. We're urging people to please consider them and do the right thing and come forward with any information you have."
It was a traumatic incident that "could have so easily been avoided", police said.
"Anti-social road activity is extremely dangerous, whether you are taking part or simply just observing, and this incident should be a reminder of that."
