Assuming you’re not at a soccer game or boxing match, but a restaurant
with a modicum of style, the first step is to ask what he or she would like to drink.
Remember, you know nothing of their vinous preferences at the moment, so I’d suggest choosing something by the glass: a bottle of wine is just too much of a commitment at this early stage.
When I was young, Orlando Starwine (no longer in production, sadly) was
considered de rigueur to get the happiness flowing; today’s equivalent is probably Prosecco – it’s a safe starter.
Here are three choices I'd be impressed by:
- Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV ($100)
A glass of this Champagne is guaranteed to put a smile on both of your dials. Toasty, rich and complex, it’s a swoony drop. - Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Riesling 2025 ($65)
This is refreshing, aromatic and delicate and won’t dominate the meal; it’ll let your food, and your date, do the talking. - Giant Steps Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2024 ($40)
A fragrant, beautiful wine that goes with almost any food. And if conversation flags, you can always introduce the subject of jazz music and John Coltrane’s famous- Giant Stepsalbum.
