Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap (Class 2) (13.50, Goodwood)

I know… I get it… you want to get off to a flying start for the meeting with a winner in the first race, so we’ll give it a try.

The Johnstons (Mark and more recently Charlie) have had three winners of this contest in the past decade, during which time there’ve been four winners at double-figure odds and four who have had at least a share of market leadership.

That honour is with Noble Horizon at the time of writing and although he looked impressive enough when scoring at Leicester last time, a 10lb rise could make it tough for him to dictate in this bigger field, as he did there.

Yabher has the ability to win this but needs to bounce back from a poor effort in a similar contest at York last time, while a back-to-form Diego El Queso would have claims from this mark.

They’re not the only ones with chances but the market has zoned in on them but I’m going to side with AL AALI, who has William Buick on board for the first time.

George Scott’s gelding had slid more than a stone in the handicap before he came good to win going away at Newmarket (1m2f, good to firm) in first-time blinkers just 11 days ago.

He made that look pretty easy, coming from last to cruise through and win by over two lengths. He looked likely to have more up his sleeve had he been pressed to produce it and now he’s back on track and from a handy draw, I think he can defy a 5lb rise to follow up.

Perhaps this is his time of year, as he also put up his best efforts in France across last summer and he looks the sort to stick with once he’s hit form with an decent price on horse racing betting sites.

Glorious Goodwood day one tip 1: Al Aali (Goodwood, 13.50) – 1pt each-way @ 8/1 (Ladbrokes)

Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) (15.35, Goodwood)

Don’t we just love these top class Flat staying races and I think it’s because we get to see these horses over the longer term. A major case in point here is Trawlerman, who went toe to toe with SCANDINAVIA in last month’s Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and lost little caste in defeat.

The Gosden’s stalwart is now eight but is clearly still able to perform at this elite level and few would begrudge him a win here. However, he still has to get past an opponent who is officially rated just 1lb higher and who won this race last year as a three-year-old.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt still has youth on his side and, who knows, maybe even another bit of improvement to come. Neither of them are much of a price and that’s clearly because none of us can confidently predict that anything else in this field has the ability to beat one or both of them.

The interesting newcomer to this sphere is Lazy Griff, who finished second in last year’s Derby and is saddle by Charlie Johnston, whose father Mark landed this with Double Trigger many years ago and this is a meeting always targeted by the yard.

It’s unlikely they’d be pitching him in here without some confidence he’ll get home and I’d not put anyone off a small each-way play on him at double-figure odds if you don’t want to go short and with the selection.

Glorious Goodwood day one tip two: Scandinavia (Goodwood, 15.35) – 3pts win @ Evens (William Hill)

Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap (Class 2) (16.10, Goodwood)

A very tough handicap to fathom, especially with so much previous Goodwood form on offer, as well as so many different pace angles right across the track.

Richard Spencer, who had a great day in last year’s Stewards’ Cup, saddles five of those declared and I’m siding with one of them, RAPPER’S DELIGHT, to run another big race.

He did just that when held off by the late charge of stablemate Twilight Calls at Newmarket last time. He was bumped well inside the final furlong that day and, although it’s arguable that he would still have been pipped by his travelling companion, it certainly wouldn’t have helped.

He’s taken well to the fitting of a visor on his last three starts and has a 1lb pull with Twilight Calls and is drawn on the opposite side of the track. He’s looks booked for another big effort and at the prices, he represents some value, at least to my eye.

Lexington Blitz, Adrestia and Run Boy Run (another Spencer inmate) are others who you can make good cases for in a fascinating contest.

Glorious Goodwood day one tip three: Rapper’s Delight (Goodwood, 16.10) – 1pt each-way @ 14/1 (Bet365)

Another big field to sort out and there are plenty who’ll fancy this, not least the narrow York winner Bintaryana and Machadadorp, whom we sided with in defeat at Newmarket last time.

The latter had no answer to what looked like a blot on the handicap over 7f that day and the Andrew Balding team now drop her back to 6f for the first time. She travelled well that day and, as one who began her career over 1m, she’ll not be stopping at the business end.

She is feared in siding with ROGUE ATTRACTION, who came up the Carlisle hill well last time to win in second-time cheekpieces (6f, good to firm) by more than the bare margin suggested.

That puts her back on track to something like the promise she was showing as a juvenile. She’s unexposed and, after just a 3lb rise, I think she can go very close in this follow-up bid and an outside price on betting apps.
