The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is not the phone that reimagines what a foldable looks like. That job belongs to its sibling, the wider-screen Galaxy Z Fold 8; the Ultra is the direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 instead. It carries forward the same tall, narrow design and the same book-style proportions, for the same audience.

If you’ve used a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold in the past and think that the shape is perfect for you, the Fold 8 Ultra is exactly the right phone for you. It has a sharper inner display, a substantially larger battery, faster charging, and Samsung’s new Flex Titanium display structure, which is designed to minimize the crease that has troubled Samsung’s foldables for years.

Price and release date

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, 2026, in London. The device went up for pre-order the same day, with general availability starting August 7, 2026, giving customers about two weeks between announcement and the phone actually shipping.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at $2,099.99 for the 256GB model, a $100 increase over the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s original price. Samsung also offers 512GB and 1TB storage configurations. If you pre-order through Samsung.com, you can save up to $1,200 with an eligible trade-in, or take a flat $200 Samsung Credit if you don’t have a device to trade in.

In other words, you should expect around a $100 to $200 price hike. Whether pre-orders will include the usual free storage upgrade offer depends on the upfront price.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: Specs at a glance

Design

Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Fold 8 Ultra retains the same form factor as the Fold 7. The book-style foldable continues to feature a tall-body, narrow cover screen design that Samsung has cherished for years.

At 4.1 mm thick when unfolded and 215g, it sheds about 0.1 mm of thickness compared to the Fold 7’s already slim 4.2 mm side profile. IP48 water and dust resistance could carry over, leaving the gap between the Fold 7 and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold unchanged. Confirmed color options (also spotted in multiple leaks and renders) include Cream Graphite, Violet Shadow, and Green Shadow (the online exclusive color).

The bigger design story is the inner display. It features Samsung’s new Flex Titanium technology, which combines a titanium alloy film with a titanium plate in the hinge area to improve overall durability while significantly reducing crease visibility on both the Fold 8 Ultra and the wider Fold 8 as well.

Samsung’s foldable displays are also rated to survive 500,000 folds at room temperature, matching the Fold 7’s durability benchmark, and the company says the crease itself is dramatically less visible than anything it’s shipped before.

Display

The inner display on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is where the biggest spec upgrade over the Fold 7 lands. Samsung bumped the resolution from 2,184 x 1,968 pixels on the Fold 7 to 2,504 x 2,256 pixels, resulting in a noticeably sharper panel on the 8-inch inner screen.

The 6.5-inch cover screen sticks to a 2,520 x 1,080-pixel resolution as the Fold 7. Both displays use a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2x panel capable of a true variable refresh rate ranging from 1-120Hz.

Samsung confirmed the inner screen reaches 3,000 nits of peak brightness, up from 2,600 nits on the Fold 7. This also makes the Fold 8 Ultra Samsung’s brightest phone to date. As widely speculated, the Fold 8 Ultra does not carry over the Privacy Display feature from the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Performance

Like the S26 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra features the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy SoC with slightly overclocked prime cores (4.74 GHz vs. 4.6 GHz). That should result in exceptional multitasking and gaming capability.

That should translate into excellent multitasking and gaming capability, along with two-way and three-way Split View support that lets you run multiple apps side by side and switch between windows with a single tap. Even otherwise, the phone feels fast for day-to-day tasks and stays responsive for longer.

Samsung pairs 12GB of RAM with the 256GB and 512GB storage variants, and 16GB of RAM with the top-tier 1TB variant. Furthermore, the foldable uses LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage (UFS 5.0 seems reserved for the purported Galaxy S27 for now).

Connectivity options include 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, and USB Type-C.

Software

The Fold 8 Ultra ships with One UI 9 out of the box, running Android 17 under the hood, making it the first Samsung phone to ship with the stable version rather than beta. For foldables specifically, One UI 9 brings two-way and three-way split-screen support and a new AI Assistant Activity dashboard, giving users a centralized view of AI automations running on their behalf.

Samsung’s Galaxy AI suite is onboard, built around Gemini Intelligence, which now automates tasks across more than 40 supported apps and can act directly from the cover screen.

Now Brief surfaces personalized daily insights and security alerts, while Now Nudge suggests next steps mid-conversation, like checking a schedule or saving a location. One UI 9 also adds enhanced Privacy Alerts that proactively flag apps attempting unnecessary background permission access.

On an 8-inch inner display, these tools have considerably more room to operate than on a conventional phone, particularly in split-screen mode.

Samsung confirmed the Fold 8 Ultra is covered under its long-term software support policy: seven years of operating system and security updates, which extends eligibility through Android 24 (if Samsung sticks with that naming for long).

Cameras

Beyond the form factor, it’s the cameras on the Fold 8 Ultra that set it apart from the Fold 8. As its direct successor, the Fold 8 Ultra keeps the Fold 7’s triple rear-camera layout, but Samsung confirmed real upgrades across the board.

While the 200MP (f/1.7) primary and the 10MP (f/2.4) telephoto cameras remain the same, the new Ultra gets a new 50MP (f/1.9) ultrawide camera, for improved brightness compared to the Fold 7’s 12MP unit, alongside sharper landscapes, group shots, and close-up detail.

Both the outer and the inner displays get a 10MP (f/2.2) selfie shooter for attending video calls or capturing quick selfies. Personally, that resolution in 2026 feels almost surreal to me, and not in a good way.

Samsung also confirmed S26 Ultra-inspired camera software, including improved low-light performance through the ProVisual Engine, video LUT support via Cine LUT for the default Camera app, and native front-and-rear dual recording through My FanCam. Combined with the upgraded ultrawide and telephoto hardware, these additions make the Fold 8 Ultra a genuinely stronger choice for photography enthusiasts than its predecessor.

Battery life and charging

The 5,000 mAh battery is one of the most meaningful upgrades over the Fold 7, which featured a 4,400 mAh cell. With the 14% larger battery, you could get up to 27 hours of video playback.

Paired with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s power efficiency, that 600 mAh increase should translate to genuine improvement in battery life. I’d say that the Fold 8 Ultra could provide around one to two additional hours of screen-on time than the Fold 7, but take that as speculation and not a verdict.

Wired charging remains at 45W, now built on a new dual-path charging architecture that gets you from 0 to 67% battery in around 30 minutes. Wireless charging holds steady at 20W. Magnetic wireless charging, which debuted on the Pixel 10 series and the Moto Edge 70 Max, did not make it to the Fold 8 Ultra.

Should you wait for the Fold 8 Ultra or buy something now?

At $2,099.99, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra crosses the $2,000 threshold Samsung had managed to avoid with the Fold 7. If that price point is a dealbreaker and you don’t need this generation’s camera and battery upgrades, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 remains available at a discounted $1,499.99 for the 256GB model, down from its revised $1,999.99 price, a genuine $600 in savings.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold (256GB) is available for $1,799, while the Motorola Razr Fold (512GB) costs $1,899 and includes a Moto Pen Ultra and Moto Watch, which makes it sound like a sweet deal.

But if you were already leaning toward Samsung’s ecosystem and wanted the sharpest inner display, brightest screen, and most capable camera system Samsung has put in a book-style foldable yet, the Fold 8 Ultra delivers exactly that, now available to buy rather than speculate about.
