A 35-year-old man is behind bars after he was charged on Wednesday over the murder of a Koondoola man two weeks ago.

John Robert Lloyd Shepherd appeared in Joondalup Magistrates Court on Thursday after he was arrested over the murder of 46-year-old Thomas MacDonald.

MacDonald died on July 17, three days after police said he was assaulted by Shepherd on Nankivell Way.

“It will be alleged, about 7pm, the accused approached the victim on Nankivell Way and seriously assaulted him before leaving the scene,” a police spokesperson said.

They added that Shepherd and MacDonald were known to each other.

A neighbour said the pair were fighting on the street and MacDonald allegedly suffered facial and head injuries as a result.

Ambulances were called to an address on the street, but MacDonald refused to be assessed at hospital, the neighbour said.

He died three days later as a result of his injuries.

Police arrested Shepherd on Wednesday and charged him over MacDonald’s death.

He appeared in Joondalup Magistrates Court on Thursday where he responded that he understood the charge put to him.

He sat looking at the floor as a lawyer from the Aboriginal Legal Service appeared on his behalf via telephone.

He did not apply for bail and the magistrate put his matter through to Stirling Gardens.

Shepherd will appear in that court on August 19.
