Tamil Nadu offers policy stability, skilled manpower, excellent infrastructure, industrial strength, and a transparent governance framework for growth and development of cities, said Minister for Housing and Urban Development B. Rajkumar.
Speaking at The Hindu Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure Summit 2026 in Chennai on Thursday (July 30, 2026), Mr. Rajkumar said: “Our government, under the visionary leadership of our Chief Minister [C. Joseph Vijay], is committed to building cities that provide every citizen with a better quality of life. Housing is not just about owning a home; it is about dignity, security, and opportunity. Urbanisation is not merely about constructing buildings; it is about creating cities that are inclusive, sustainable, resilient, and economically vibrant.”
He added that Tamil Nadu has always been one of India’s most urbanised and industrialised States. “Today, more than half of our population lives in urban areas. Every year, lakhs of our people migrate to towns and cities seeking better opportunities, education, healthcare, and employment. The government is committed to making urban governance more transparent, technology-driven, and citizen-friendly.”
“We are working towards faster planning approvals, improved infrastructure, integrated mobility, better stormwater management, enhanced water security, scientific waste management, affordable housing, and sustainable urban development,” Mr. Rajkumar further said. “Green buildings, energy-efficient construction, water conservation, climate-resilient infrastructure, and smart urban planning will be integral to Tamil Nadu’s future growth,” he added.
Role of private sector
Pointing to the significant role played by the private sector in urban growth and development, Mr. Rajkumar said: “The government alone cannot build world-class cities. We welcome responsible investments that generate employment while improving the quality of urban life. Today, Tamil Nadu is witnessing unprecedented investments in manufacturing, global capability centres, logistics, electronics, automobiles, renewable energy, and emerging technologies. We firmly believe that development should not come at the cost of the environment.”
