Zendaya says she admires her husband Tom Holland and his dedication to the iconic Spider-Man role and its influence on fans, stating: "The person wearing the suit is a good person and cares".
The 29-year-old Dune actress, who portrays Michelle Jones-Watson, known as ‘MJ’, the love interest of Holland’s Peter Parker, recently reprised her role in the latest blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
This new instalment is set four years after the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, where a powerful spell erased the web-slinger’s true identity from global memory to safeguard the universe.
Speaking at the film’s London premiere, Zendaya, who first met Holland, 30, during the production of their initial franchise film, highlighted his professional evolution.
She noted her appreciation for seeing him "grow into such a leadership position" after he contributed to the writers’ room for the first time, helping to shape the story.
Zendaya said: “I admire many things about him.
“Off camera, I would say watching him grow into such a leadership position on this film and really take control in such a beautiful, creative way.
“I think he cares so much about Peter Parker and the character, and you can really see that.
“I love the way that he extends that outside of his everyday life because little kids don’t know that he’s not Spider-Man and I think he wears that with pride.
“It’s nice to know that the person wearing the suit is a good person and cares. So yeah, I love that side too.”
Zendaya also praised Holland for his ability to create such a “dynamic character”.
She added: “I think, as an actor, his ability to create such physicality with the character, I think people don’t understand how difficult it is to have the physicality of Peter Parker inside Spider-Man while your face is covered.
“I just think he’s so talented.”
Zendaya has become known for ‘method dressing’ – walking the red carpet in outfits that reflect the film she’s starring in – and attended the London event in a shimmering ivory gown which featured glittery threads mimicking the strands of a spider’s web.
A golden spider brooch sat at the base of her spine and mirrored a similar piece of jewellery that clung to the knot of husband’s tie.
The couple met in 2017 on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming and have gone on to act opposite one another in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
They also starred together in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which was released earlier this month.
