SEOUL, July 31 (Yonhap) -- HD Hyundai Co., the holding company of South Korea's leading shipbuilding conglomerate, saw its second-quarter net profit jump over five times from a year earlier, boosted by high-margin vessels and the construction equipment sector.

The company's net profit for the April-June period was 3.17 trillion won (US$2.2 billion), up 550.2 percent from a year earlier, according to a regulatory filing Friday.

Operating income rose 262.2 percent on-year to 4.12 trillion won. Sales increased 30.2 percent to 22.4 trillion won.

The stellar performance was mostly lead by its shipbuilding company, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., whose operating profit shot up 72.5 percent on-year.

Such robust earnings were due to improved productivity and sales growth of its high-margin vessels, the company said.

HD Hyundai XiteSolution, the intermediate holding company for the group's entire construction machinery and industrial equipment sector, also contributed, with the firm's operating profit surging 79.6 percent on-year, thanks to improving global market conditions.

The group's aggregate sales for the first half of the year were 42 trillion won, up 22.5 percent on-year. Operating profit for the first six months of the year stood at 6.96 trillion won, up 187 percent.
