In the wake of hundreds of domestic consumers complaining about inflated electricity bills for July month, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation limited (TNPDCL) has planned to reexamine more than 3.70 lakh electricity bills by deputing all the officials in the city.
In a circular issued by Chairman and Managing Director of TNPDCL Arun Roy, dated August 29, citing the widespread complaints received from domestic consumers about exorbitant electricity bills having been issued to several consumers, he has directed all electricity officials including senior officials of Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers, to re-inspect the electricity bills which have high variations. The circular has noted that 3.70 lakh consumers who have received high bills to be rechecked by comparing the bills of May this year.
The circular has also set a time frame for all the 3.70 lakh bills to be rechecked by August 7 and necessary action of re-issuing new bills to be issued.
A senior official of the north circle covering several localities of north Chennai said already more than 10,000 electricity bills have been identified and inspections are under progress. Similarly officials in south Chennai circle have also started inspection of inflated bills to correct it.
S. Ponraj, a resident of Saidapet, said he has received an electricity bill for consuming more than 650 units for bi-monthly of July whereas his normal bi-monthly consumption always ranged around 450 units.
The residents also wanted the TNPDCL, which faces shortage of staff in all categories, to implement the smart meter scheme at the earliest to avoid such inflated billing problems.
