21-year-old student fatally stabbed by ex-boyfriend in Sibonga, Cebu

Killer survives apparent suicide.

CEBU CITY, Philippines — A 21-year-old college student was fatally stabbed by her ex-boyfriend inside a boarding house in Barangay Poblacion, Sibonga, Cebu, on Saturday morning, August 1.

The victim was declared dead at the scene, while the suspect, who allegedly stabbed himself after the attack, survived and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

In an interview on Saturday, Police Major Michael G. Calaurian, chief of Sibonga Municipal Police Station, said the incident happened after the suspect went to the victim’s boarding house to reconcile with the victim and ask her to get back together.

Initial investigation showed that the suspect went to the victim’s boarding house to ask her to get back together.

The victim’s sibling, who shared the boarding house with her, then left the two alone so they could talk.

Police said the victim refused to reconcile.

“Ang suspect, gusto makigbalik sa biktima unya dili na man musugot ang biktima, mao tong iyahang gidunggab,” Calaurian said. (The suspect wanted them to be together again, but the victim refused. That’s why he stabbed her.)

Sibling discovers crime scene

Authorities said the incident was reported to the Sibonga Municipal Police Station at around 10:33 a.m., after the stabbing reportedly occurred at around 10:20 a.m. in Purok 4, Barangay Poblacion, Sibonga.

According to Calaurian, the victim’s sibling returned to the boarding house after looking for a spare key because the room was locked.

Upon entering, the sibling found both the victim and the suspect lying inside.

Victim declared dead

Responding police officers found the victim with stab wounds to the neck and chest, said Calaurian.

He said personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) declared the victim dead at the scene.

The suspect also sustained stab wounds to his neck and chest, which police said were self-inflicted after the attack.

He remained conscious when responders arrived and was initially brought to the Carcar District Hospital before arrangements were made to transfer him to a hospital in Cebu City for further medical treatment.

As of Saturday, police said they are furthering their investigation into the case.
