In another round of potential name changes, the Tamil Nadu government has in official communications dropped the name Chief Minister’s Thayumanavar Scheme, under which essential commodities supplied through ration shops are delivered to the doorsteps of senior citizens aged above 65 and persons with disabilities.

Instead, official releases from the State government refer to it as the scheme for doorstep delivery of Public Distribution System commodities for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The scheme was launched by the previous DMK government headed by M.K. Stalin.

The State government also appointed Guru, founder of an online Vijay fan club, to head the Tamil Nadu Fact Check Unit, which was formed by the previous DMK government to combat fake news and disinformation, particularly on social media platforms.

It is learnt that the Fact Check Unit has been renamed the Information Integrity Desk. However, no Government Order or official notification had been made public in this regard as of Sunday, and the unit continues to retain its original name on X.

Renaming spree

The new government has already renamed several schemes introduced by its predecessor, including renaming the free bus travel scheme for women from Magalir Vidiyal Payanam to Magalir Payanam, and the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme to the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.
