Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday recovered the body of a 48-year-old man from Panchakodi in Rayi village of Bantwal taluk, who was washed away in a rivulet on Saturday.

The police suspect that the man slipped into the rivulet while crossing a footbridge near his house around 7.30 p.m. A torch and slippers were found near the spot. Following a search operation, NDRF personnel found the body in Sangabettu, a few metres downstream from where he reportedly slipped.

Heavy rains

It continued to rain heavily in the Sullia, Puttur, and Belthangady taluks of Dakshina Kannada on Monday. In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday, Dakshina Kannada recorded 48.3 mm of rainfall.

According to figures released by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jalsoor in Sullia taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 94.5 mm, followed by 72.5 mm in Shirtady of Moodbidri taluk, 72 mm in Belandur of Kadaba taluk, 54.4 mm in Uppinangady, 52.4 mm in Belthangady, 48 mm in Olamogaru, 45.5 mm in Kedambady (both in Puttur taluk), 45.5 mm in Barya of Belthangady taluk, 41.8 mm in Puttur, and 41.5 mm in Kadeshwalya of Bantwal taluk.

In a release, the Dakshina Kannada district administration said as many as nine houses were partially damaged and 210 utility poles were damaged due to rain in the last 24 hours. In this period, 1.3 km of Major District Roads and 300 metres of State Highways were also damaged.

The Netravathi River was flowing at 6.9 metres in Bantwal, while it was at 27.5 metres in Uppinangady. The Kumaradhara River was at 81.2 metres in Pulikukku and the Gurupura River was at 4.4 metres in Addur. The water level at the Thumbe Dam was at 5.5 metres and all 30 gates were opened. The water level in the AMR Dam was at 18.9 metres, the release stated.

Officials’ visit

Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan visited rain-affected areas in Belthangady taluk on Monday. He visited the bridge in Nidagal, spoke to officials about the structure, and checked the flow of water. He also visited landslip-prone areas in Mundaje and directed officials to be prepared to handle eventualities in every village. Belthangady Tahsildar S.N. Naragund and Belthangady Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Bhavani Shankar accompanied him.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narwade Vinayak Karbhari visited places where work to repair damaged roads and drains has been taken up in Puttur taluk. He inspected the work on the Kavu-Eshwaramangala Road in Ariyadka Gram Panchayat, Bhaktakodi-Tangalady-Sarvey Road in Munduru village, Kedambady Road, Aanadka Road in Narimogaru village, and Minipadavu-Kapikkad Road in Aryapu village. He also visited the Shivarama Karanth school in Puttur, where a compound wall has collapsed.
